Bull Terrier's are very sadly prone to heart disorders.
Valve disorders and abnormalities.
The first and most common symptom, can also be a symptom of nothing, that is a Heart Murmur.
Often present in many young animals as well as humans, Heart murmurs can be due to a number of things and often are not serious and go away in time.
However, in Bull Terrier's who are prone to heart abnormalities, it can be an early warning sign and cause for concern.
However, many owner have no clue their beloved pet has anything wrong with them, they seem to act and play and grow normally, until one day the dog has a heart attack while out playing in the back yard.
Or simply goes to sleep one day and never wakes up.
It is very hard to loose a Beloved family member to such a thing, and can sneak up on you so quietly, you would never have known.
Once again, another reason I cannot stress enough to buy a puppy from a responsible breeder who has good health testing practices in place as these abnormalities are very much genetic and are passed on from parents, or grandparents to offspring.
When purchasing a puppy make sure you talk to them about the parents Color Heart Doppler and ask to see the results.
If all they can show you is a health certificate that says nothing about a specific heart Doppler, then you need to get up and walk away.
These tests can only be done by a specialist and not a regular vet because it is more then just listening to the heart, it is seeing it on a a screen.
The test is not dangerous- though it is costly.
What the specialist is looking for is any abnormalities in the hearts rhythm and flow, if the heart seems swollen with fluid, is not pumping properly or any of the valves seem blocked or there are holes where their should not be, the vet will be able to see them.
Heart conditions are often fatal without the guidance and care of a skilled veterinarian.
