This is the Bull Terrier Illustrated standard
I wanted to go into a bit more Detail about Structure, As For Me It wasn't until a friend help to point out to me EXACTLY what I was looking for that I truly began to understand a proper structure and how it affects the dog.
Most people do not realize that The Standard for Bull Terrier's has been around a Long time.
A dogs structure Plays a BIG part of the dogs Health and also how well it moved while working.
A working dog NEEDS to have proper structure for its Job, The Smoother the dog's movement the less energy he expends therefore the best worker she will become.
Out turned Elbows can throw the Entire spine out of alignment causing spinal issues or elbow issues. Over Angulation of the knee can cause knee problems. Out turned Hocks can cause Hips and knee problems.
If You have never seen the difference in movement between a dog with Poor Posture compared to a dog with Proper structure- You are Missing out!
Many people assume that the standard is for nothing more then a beauty contest and in no way reflects on the “average dog” in any way. But those who think that could not be farther from the truth!
I often try to use Pilates as an example to help people to understand. Pilates is a form of exercise as well as body alignment.
Many people who do Pilates rave about the wonderful results and how it can help alleviate many things one would never suspect it to such as digestion, inflammation, lethargy, joint pain, back pain knee pain and many other things.
The reason for this is because our body was designed to have a specific shape to allow proper bodily function.
When these things become mis-aligned, it causes a domino effect and our body is unable to function the best to its abilities and in the worst case scenario cause many issues along the way.
Imagine in your head, a spine, surrounded by soft tissues all snug and straight, imagine it bends out of place, even slightly, it pushes against that soft tissue, that soft tissues reacts by swelling thus putting pressure on other parts surrounding it.
Everything in your body is contained, it does not have unlimited room to wiggle about or be misaligned it is like that for all living creatures.
Poor bone structure can cause things such as:
lethargy-
inflammation and mild to severe pain-
poor digestion-
joint pain and joint dislocation-
depression-
anxiety-
lameness-
and much more.
So while no dog has 100% PERFECT structure, buying a dog from a breeder who takes great care in trying to make sure their dogs have the best structure possible as oppose to a breeder who does not care and breeds a poor structured dog to another poor structured dog to create dogs with chronic structure base issues should be avoided, even if they do simply claim to be
“pet breeders and not show breeders”
Good, sound structure is for MORE then just to win a ribbon, it is important to the health and well being of any dog
and a happy dog equals a happy family.
